Bring your trail running shoes and your mountain bike, then run, ride, run! This event is a staple in the off-road events calendar. Formerly known as XTERRA Matterley, it’s now back where it began, with TrailX.
As well as the full distance race we offer a Youth and HalfX event so if you’re at least 14 years old on race day and have sense for adventure come join us, regardless of your experience!
The full distance competition consists of 5km of trail running, a 15km cross country mountain bike ride, and finally a 2.5km run to finish. If you’re joining us for the HalfX or the Youth race then it’s the same format of run, ride, run but the trail running route will be 2.5km and the mountain biking will be around 10km.
The course
The courses for both trail running and mountain biking are entirely off road and contained within the private Matterley estate.
The trail run
Starting on a wide gravel road, there is plenty of space to find your place, from there it’s a great mix of woodland paths and open tracks as you travel round a stunning 2.5km lap. There are plenty of ups and downs, twists and turns along the way to keep you on your toes.
The mountain bike course
The bike course follows the same theme of woodland singletrack, whilst including plenty of open forest roads for a breather and allowing for safe overtaking on the 5km bike lap.
While we’re talking about bikes. You can ride any pedal powered off-bike (e-bikes are not permitted), including Gravel or Cyclocross bikes but you will only be eligible for British Triathlon National Age Group Team selection if you ride a mountain bike. The course can be rough in sections so a mountain bike will be a lot more fun – and faster too, so if you have one available. For more information check out the FAQs and Rules below.
